University Statistics Committee/Master of Statistics
Business Track Procedures
1. location
The Business Track of the Master of Statistics Program is located within the Department of Operations and Information Systems in the David Eccles School of Business.
2. track faculty
The Business Track faculty are faculty within the David Eccles School of Business. Although faculty participate from different departments, the largest group of active MStat faculty are made up of members of the Decision Sciences group within the Department of Operations and Information Systems.
3. Business Track Representative to the University Statistics Committee
The University Statistics Committee votes to nominate regular, voting committee members, one from each track plus the chair, and sends these nominations to the Dean of the Graduate School annually in the spring. The Dean of the Graduate School appoints the University Statistics Committee. Nominations for track representatives come from each track, according to each track’s procedures, each spring. Track faculty other than the track representative may opt to serve as ad hoc members of the University Statistics Committee. However, only the track representative is a voting member of the Committee.
The procedures of the Business track for nomination of Track Representative to the University Statistics Committee are as follows: the regular faculty of the Business track alternate as track nominees for Business track representative, recognizing that individuals may pass when it is their turn.
4. Track Interface with the Department of Operations and Information Systems
The interface between tracks and departments is described in the University Statistics Committee’s Procedures as follows:
“The MStat degree is granted in a specific department (e.g., MStat in Business is granted in the Department of Operations and Information Systems in the David Eccles School of Business). However, the Chair of the University Statistics Committee signs on all forms (e.g, admissions, candidacy, etc.) as department chair for this program, by agreement with the home departments of each track when the MStat program was created.
Track faculty follow each track’s procedures to coordinate with their home department.
The committee coordinates with related programs to assure that course content meets MStat students’ needs.”
Department of Operations and Information Systems (and when appropriate, other departments within the David Eccles School of Business) determines teaching assignments and course schedules within the department, including courses taught for the MStat program. When a Business Faculty Member teaches an MStat course, the faculty member and her or his respective chair decide whether the course will be considered in-load or overload. In the case that the course is in-load, the money from the University Statistics Committee allocated for the course goes to the respective department to pay for another course that would usually be taught by the faculty member. When the course is taught on an overload basis, the money from the University Statistics Committee is paid directly to the faculty member. The Business Track Faculty provides input and feedback to the School of Business, including review of course offerings, in order to ensure that the needs of the MStat students are met. MStat in Business students graduate in the David Eccles School of Business, and they march in the Business School’s Convocation.
5. Business Track Admissions
Applicants to the MStat Program apply to the Graduate School, which forwards their applications to the University Statistics Committee and from there to the Master’s Programs Office. The Master’s Programs Office reviews the application as they do MBA applicants. At that point the application deviates from the rest of the MBA applicants, and is sent only to the Business Track representatives for their approval.
Business Track MStat students are admitted once a year only, and the application requires students to declare whether they are full- or half-time students. The due date for completed applications to the Graduate School is February 1, and to the School of Business’ Masters Programs Office is March 15 for the following autumn. Priority processing and consideration is given to applicants completed by this deadline. Applicants completed after that time but by April 15 are given full consideration as space in the program permits. Applications completed after April 15 are not considered without approval of the Director of Masters Programs. The Business Track Representative initials forms indicating the track’s wishes and forwards the forms back to the Program Director (i.e., the Chair of the University Statistics Committee). The University Statistics Committee Chair reviews forms for program-level issues and provides the department-level signatures.
6. business Track Curriculum
The Business Track prerequisites and curriculum are detailed in the MStat Program Brochure and on the Business Track portion of this website.
